The Lindau Alumni Association of Pakistan
Brief Report on the participation in the 57th meeting of Noble
Laureates in Physiology or Medicine with students and young
researchers, 1st-6th July, 2007, Lindau, Germany.
By: Dr. Syed Hammad Hassan

How good were you as compared to your fellow participants of advanced
countries?

I think that our group from Pakistan was as good as any other group from any other
country, we were at par with even the nations which are considered to be far ahead
of us in terms of science and technology. I can state with a lot of confidence that our
group members were much better prepared than most other participants and we
showed this during the Lectures, Panel discussions and especially during the Science
Bazaar.

Our group members were very confident, interacted very openly with the Nobel
Laureates and other students and young researchers and asked questions which
were very relevant and mature.

The main reasons why we were able to represent our country, Pakistan,  in the best
way possible is mainly because we were selected after a very strict selection
procedure and also because we were properly prepared and guided during the
Orientation Camp which really helped us a lot during the course of the meetings.

In a nut shell we were without any doubt as good as any other nation and I feel proud
that I was a part of such a talented group of people.

Was the public money worth spending for this participation?

I think that the public money spent for our participation in the 57th Annual Meeting
of the Nobel Laureates in Physiology/Medicine was worth every single penny. This
Meeting presented a unique opportunity to students and researchers to interact with
the best minds in the world who have great scientific achievements to their credit
and this was a highly motivating and inspiring experience for young students like us.

This meeting has encouraged and inspired me to take up a more research oriented
approach towards my studies and I hope that this will have a very positive impact on
my professional career and hopefully I will be able to inspire other students and
colleagues to take research more seriously.

I think that this meeting has helped us realize that if we want to progress and
prosper then we will need to invest a lot more to help inspire our students to pursue
science and research and I think that this is a very good initiative taken by Pakistan
Atomic Energy Commission, Pakistan Science Foundation and Higher Education
Commission, and it will go a long way in developing a ‘Culture of Science’ in our
country.

What benefits you think Pakistani students derive from such
participations and should this program be continued in future?

Pakistani students have benefited immensely from their participation in meetings
with the Nobel Laureates, I know this because I have learnt that alumni from
previous meetings have been so highly motivated by their encounters and
interactions with the Nobel Laureates in Lindau that they have ventured into
research with a lot of zeal and have been able to secure admissions in PhD. and
Masters programmes in well reputed departments and universities all over the world.

I can aver that this year’s meeting has also greatly inspired us to excel in our
respective fields and has encouraged us to take research seriously. This experience
will go a long way in making us and other Pakistani students good dedicated
professionals who can contribute positively towards the progress of our country.

Also I believe that it is activities like these that can instill confidence in our talented
youth and give them the opportunity to exhibit their competitiveness at the
international level and make a good name for their country. I sincerely hope that
these meetings will continue because they are certainly in the best interest of our
youth and nation.

Acknowledgements

I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to express my
gratitude for the Bernadotte family, the President and the Council of the
Lindau Nobel Laureate meetings for organizing a conference which has
no parallel in the scientific world. Also I would like to thank all the
Nobel laureates for their willingness to share their wisdom with us.

It was an over whelming experience for me. The lectures, panel
discussions and especially the science bazaar were all very interesting
and inspiring and they presented us with the unique opportunity to
interact with the Nobel Laureates and young talented researchers from
all over the globe.

I thoroughly enjoyed the opening ceremony, the meals at the tent, the
guided city tour, the concert at the city theatre by the Ubs Verbier
Festival Chamber Orchestra and the trip to the beautiful Isle of Mainau
was just amazing. I would always remember the hospitality shown by the
people of Germany and especially Lindau. It was a great honour for me
to have been a part of the experience.

I can imagine that all of this was made possible after months of
planning and hard work and I would like to congratulate every single
person who was involved in the organizing committee for a job well done.

I would also like to thank our academic ambassadors, Prof. N.M.Butt
and Mr. Waqar from the core of my heart who took very good care of us
during the whole trip. These dedicated individuals arranged for
everything and made us feel very comfortable and right at home and this
was one of the main reasons that we were so relaxed and were able to
concentrate on the conference in a much better way. All of this would
not have been possible without their continuous encouragement and
support and I feel deeply indebted to them for allowing me to savour the
experience of a lifetime.

To continue that positive and useful interaction and
exchange of ideas, a forum has also been made. Hopefully it
would be a platform for generating good discussions and
staying in touch with fellow students/scientists from around
the world. International Participants are also invited to
become members and share their experiences and ideas and
participate actively in the discussions.
