Brief Report on the participation in the 57th meeting of Noble
Laureates in Physiology or Medicine with students and young
researchers, 1st-6th July, 2007, Lindau, Germany.
By: Dr. Fozia Fatima
Background:
17 Nobel laureates and 563 young talented young researchers/ students participated
in this years 57th Nobel laureates meeting (19th forum dedicated to Physiology or
Medicine) to give this peculiar event an international flavour. The meeting
comprising of Scientific program (Panel discussion, round table discussion, science
bazaar and lectures by Nobel Laureates), Social program (evening concert, guided
tour through the medieval city of Lindau and boat trip across the lake Constance)
was a unique experience.
Following is a brief report of this meeting in view of the asked questions:
1. How good were you as compared to your fellow participants of
advanced countries?
Intellectually our students were as good as students from any of the advanced
nations. The way they participated in the scientific discussions, science Bazaars and
question answer sessions at the end of morning sessions was commendable and was
admired equally by Nobel Laureates as well as other participants. Our students took
up questions and discussed new ideas with such professional competency that lead to
a very fruitful Group discussions. Even they didn’t miss the opportunity to grasp
knowledge and clarify their queries during the coffee and tea breaks. In fact some of
the senior participants of advanced nations approached us to discuss their research
plans.
As i understood, one of most important aspect of our students was that their field of
vision is quite broader, however they do lack the more detailed and precise insight to
the more basic medical science subject. Also, our students were trying to apply the
role of basic molecular medicine to the clinical medicine.
But, what I felt most is, that Pakistani participants desperately need and want much
more guidance and support to add to their naive ideas, knowledge and intellectual
efficiency.
2. Was the public money worth spending for this participation?
Participation in Nobel Laureates Meeting was not just an academic activity in its true
spirit. All the participants were the ambassadors of their nations. Alongside academic
activities, participants were projecting name and fame of their countries, and
Pakistani students did it with great success. Aside from this international aspect, this
exposure has evoked new potentials of spirits and enthusiasm, and will help the
participants to make new grounds and footing to excel in science. This motivation will
also be transferred to the students in Pakistan, who will also try to represent
Pakistan internationally with their excelling works in field of science and research.
3. What benefits you think the Pakistani students derive from such
participation and should this program be continued in future?
The inspiration and motivation one gets from the endless work of Nobel laureates is
out of question. In such an event which brings students from all over the world
closer, one is really awakened by the happenings in the field of science and
technology. Also, through interactive sessions, one can compare the quality of work in
various parts of world with that of theirs. In short, i think one can identify ones goals
more effectively after such exposures. And being a representative of whole nation
one can defend and project Ones values at international forum and practically
demonstrate all this, during their stay and communications.
From my point of view and in light of my own experience at the meeting, I think such
healthy activity must be continued in future. I think our government must support
such activities and must try to initiate steps to open horizons of such activities
happening all over the world.
Suggestion
We have to project the importance of such international events through media, with
coverage of the meeting itself. Also we need to involve private sector to support such
projects, in this way we can ensure participation of more students in such academic
activities.
Acknowledgements
In the end I would like to appreciate the Lindau Council for excellent
arrangements. The work of members of Council for making this event a
life time experience for the participants is indeed commendable. The
audio-visual aids and seating arrangements were very user friendly for
all the participants.
We all are highly thankful to Lindau Council for providing us the
greatest atmosphere to interact with Nobel Laureates and all other
participants
I must acknowledge the most sincere efforts and fatherly attitude of Dr
N M Butt and Mr Waqar Butt who made all moments of this expedition
right from the orientation camp to our landing back at Islamabad a
memory for life time.
I must mention the caring and friendly company of my fellow
participants from Pakistan, thanks to all of you.
To continue that positive and useful interaction and
exchange of ideas, a forum has also been made. Hopefully it
would be a platform for generating good discussions and
staying in touch with fellow students/scientists from around
the world. International Participants are also invited to
become members and share their experiences and ideas and
participate actively in the discussions.
